You love your linen dress. Summer is over, the heating is on, and you are wondering whether it has to go to the back of the wardrobe until May. The short answer is no. A linen dress can work well into late autumn and on milder winter days, as long as you treat it as one layer of an outfit rather than the whole outfit.
We have already written about styling a linen dress for fall. This guide picks up where that one stops: what to do when it gets properly cold, which layers add the most warmth, and when it is simply time to switch to a heavier knit.
Can you really wear linen in winter?
Yes, with one honest caveat. Linen is a light, open fabric that is loved in summer precisely because it does not trap heat. On its own it will not keep you warm on a freezing day. What it does give you in winter is a smooth, comfortable layer next to the skin and a clean silhouette that you can build around.
The trick is to add warmth underneath, on top and at your legs and feet, while keeping the dress visible enough that the outfit still looks like your linen dress.
Choose the right linen dress to start with
Not every linen dress is equally easy to winterise. Look for:
- Sleeves. Long or three-quarter sleeves are much easier to layer than sleeveless or strappy styles. The CANDY long sleeve linen blend dress is a good example.
- A shape with room. A-line or relaxed cuts leave space for a thin layer underneath without pulling. The EMMA three-quarter sleeve belted dress also lets you define the waist over layers.
- Deeper colours. Darker and earthy tones sit naturally with winter coats and boots.
Both dresses above are a linen blend of 87% linen and 13% cotton. You can see all current styles in our linen dresses collection.
Layer 1: what goes underneath
The layer under the dress is the one that keeps you warm without anyone seeing it.
- A thin long-sleeve top with a neckline lower than your dress's, so it stays hidden.
- A fine base layer on really cold days. If wool does not bother your skin, a thin wool base layer is very effective. If it does, choose a soft non-wool one.
- Opaque or thermal tights. Legs are where most people feel the cold in a dress, so this is the single most useful winter addition.
Layer 2: wool on top
Wool over linen is a classic winter pairing. The textures contrast nicely, and the wool sits over your sleeves and shoulders, which is where you want the warmth. Three pieces from our Winter collection are made for wearing over dresses:
- DRESS CARDIGAN – Wool Wrap Cardigan: cut to end at the high hip and fasten at the waist, so it does not hide the skirt of your dress or add bulk.
- LIGHT VEST – Fine Wool V-Neck Vest: warms the body and leaves the arms free, so nothing bunches under a coat. Handy for a cold office.
- WILLOW – Wool Blend Longline Cardigan: a longer brushed wool blend cardigan that falls just above the knee, thin enough to wear under a coat.
Belting a cardigan or vest at the waist over an A-line linen dress keeps the outfit from looking boxy.
Layer 3: coat, boots and accessories
- A coat that covers the hem or comes close to it keeps the whole look neat and warm.
- Knee-high or ankle boots with tights ground a light fabric and keep feet warm.
- A scarf fills the neckline gap that many summer dresses leave open.
When to switch to a heavier knit instead
There are days when layering linen stops making sense: sleet, long outdoor commutes, or when you want a single dress that does more of the work. That is where a denser knit dress is the easier choice.
Our Punto Milano dresses are cut from an Italian Punto Milano knit (60% viscose, 35% polyamide, 5% elastane). It is a stable double knit with more body than linen, it is wrinkle-resistant, and it contains no wool, which suits people who find wool itchy. It is not wool and not as warm as wool, so on the coldest days you would still add tights and the same wool cardigan on top. Some of the shapes you may know from our linen line also come in Punto Milano, for example STORY and FRENCH, so you can keep the silhouette you like and change only the fabric.
Caring for linen in the colder months
Winter layering means your linen dress is protected from sweat and friction by the layers under and over it, so you can often air it between wears rather than washing it every time. Our guide to keeping clothes fresh between washes has simple ways to do that. Follow the care label on each piece.
A simple winter formula
Thin layer underneath, linen dress, wool cardigan or vest on top, tights, boots and a coat. That combination takes most linen dresses comfortably through the milder part of winter. When the weather really bites, reach for a denser knit dress and keep the same cardigan and boots.
